So of course there's the MS line.
MS-Dos, Windows 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, 2003, CE, PocketOS and the next version in the home line... if it ever shows up. Linux has tons of flavors, coming from Debian, RedHat, Suse and a lot of other major players as well as relative newcomers, such as Knoppix (VERY cool if you haven't tried it yet - boots from CD-Rom for windows users to get their feet wet). There's also Mac OS and all it's variants up until 9, then OSX kicks it into the same lines as FreeBSD. Thers's also different Unix variants. SCO is one of the more notables, as is HPUX. Many others are available. IBM still has AIX. Sun makes Solaris, which is fairly Linux-ish now. PalmOS has a reasonable distribution now. Then we start getting into the niche players, such as Netware, Netilla, Cisco OS and on down the line. If you really want to get into the entire list of OS's, phones and cars have their own OS now. Every OS on the market is designed to fill a specific niche in some way, with Windows being the most popular because the niche is the average consumer that doesn't want to know the internal workings but wants it easy to use. Did you want to be any more focused than every OS in a duscussion, or should we continue listing? I'm still missing a lot of OS choices here. Brian.

I am an Ubuntu fan because it is safe, stable, easy, user friendly, good looking, free and open source. I had many problems with Windows systems in the past and I am very happy that I have found this alternative solution, that solved all my problems. I won't say that I never encounter any problem at all, but they are so minor and easy to solve compared to my Windows nightmare.
I now use the computer for where I bought it for and that is to work with and not to waist my time solving all kinds of weird problems or reinstalling my system, defragmant and so on, where I as a non technical person don't want anything to do with. Ubuntu safes me so much time and worries about virus infections or spyware that it really amazes me that still so many people fall into the Microsoft trap. If you think this is nonsense or if you are curious, just try it out and download the live CD here: www.ubuntu.com/ (With the live cd you can try Ubuntu without installing it to your computer - it is a bit slow and not all the features are there but it is a good way to get an overview). If you don't want to download it, you can also ask to have it send to you for free. |
