How many simultaneous hits can my server handle?

I have a number of web sites on my virtual server and I'm getting about 300 visitors a day total. But in a world of about 6 billion people I would think there would be swings in the number of visitors that would have a wider range then 275 to 325 hits a day. Is it my server that is only handling so many simultaneous visitors or is it the Search Engines playing musical chairs with my keywords keeping me at about 40 to 50 visitors on my better sites?
I would think that with 6 billion people in the world that maybe I'd get 30 visitors today but tomorrow I might get 300 visitors. But there seems to be this magical number that's around 30 to 50 hits for the non professional hobbyist.
Any one have any info on this or is it just me.

Hi,

If your server was repelling these hits because it couldn't handle it, you would know.
Either from people complaining or tons of connection errors
