Default Unable to upgrade PHP

We have our website on an offsite dedicated server.
Red Hat 8.0
Apache 2.0.40
Current PHP 4.2.2

I need to upgrade PHP to 4.3.10 because of the security issues with our current version. When I attempt to install through BASH using the ./configure command that I got from phpinfo();

I get the following error(s):
apxs:Error: Invalid query string `APU_BINDIR'.
apxs:Error: Invalid query string `APR_BINDIR'.
./configure: line 1: /apr-config: No such file or directory
./configure: line 1: /apu-config: No such file or directory
configure: error: Please note that Apache version >= 2.0.44 is required.

I attempted to get help through Simple Machines, original thread at:
http://www.simplemachines.org/commun...?topic=24895.0

According to php.net, the php v4.3.10 is compatible with Apache 2.0.40.
Can anyone provide any insight or help???

The ./configure option --with apxs is for apache 1.* you should change --with apxs to --with apxs2

Looks like you need to upgrade apache to >= 2.0.44 first.

Running php with apache2 is not recommended by the folks at php. Read the install files at php.net and see what they say on the matter.

If you post a phpinfo page then you can get the current configure string and use it to build your php.
