Hi,
My friend is looking for a laptop so I thought I would ask people here for the suggestions... here is the deal... Usage is going to be for Mostly Programming, I checked Dell, Sony and IBM laptops I liked Dell ones and Sony ones very much.. But i have heard people saying that IBM is the best, and sony ones are good in the looks but the parts they use are not good enough... I liked small screen laptops i.e. 12-13" ones.. do you guys prefer small screen laptops for programming? and which brand do you prefer? All suggestions are welcome :) Deep

Hi, Deep13. I hope I can finally help you for all the knowledgeable advice you give!
I don't have any personal experience with laptops, but I go to X-bit Labs for reviews on harware. They are amazingly in depth. Maybe there are opinions on what to look for here, but I don't see reviews on IBM, Sony, or Dell Anyways, they are just doing a survey of 'The best' from 2004, and one category os Notebooks. I imagine results will be out within the next week, and these will be based on programmers, and gamers, opinions. The poll is here One thing to keep in mind, is that IBM just announced some restructuring of their desktop and laptop divisions at their factories in Japan. I don't know what all that means, but I read that here: IBM and Lenovo Deal Finalized, IBM’s PC Unit Acquired by Lenovo ------------------------ Here are some better reviews: Top 15 Notebook PCs This looks really good: PCMag - LAPTOP & NOTEBOOK FINDER One thing to keep in mind, is battery life, I would imagine! :O))) |

thanks for the reply mikmik, I checked many sites with reviews and all but I wanted to know people who are really using it or friends are using it...
basically user reviews...coz i had seen sites giving good review about the software/hardware but when people use it they might not find it as good as it was written in the review... btw thanks for the xbit labs, i generally check reviews here Regards Deep

That anantech is good one. I was just reading about a AMD 64 there. didn't realize how good it is, just went there from a Google search. I bookmarked it. :O) Maybe someone will give you experiences of using laptops. Good luck, man! |

I'm on my second Acer and can only say that I'm very satisfied with the performance/price ratio of the brand. Had no problems with both of them.
Regarding size, I bought an Acer Aspire One because I needed something to carry around a lot and I didn't want it to be heavy or big. If your programming is mainly typing and not heavy compiling ... check out Acer's netbooks offer.
