You meant MySQL of course, didn't you? And it runs on Windows boxes as well. I have both (plus Apache, FTPzilla, SSL, etc.) running on mine.
You are right about it being a home run, would have to agree with you there. It is simple and straight forward to learn ... more so than ASP and SQL Server stuff (which seems to change the way you have to use the programming every year). It is bulky and slower than the php/mysql combo. This is not a personal opinion, it is just a matter of fact.
Zend Technologies has some excellent articles/tutorials/tips about using php with MySQL. I see that some people already have mentioned php.net, mysql.com, etc. Those are a good place to start too.
