I've got a problem I'm having with a database and I'm sure ssomeone has had it before as it can't be that rare. I set up years ago an ecommerce site selling craft and cultural goods. All was well, but now the years are starting to show on the store and it needs a little nip and tuck to make it look as pretty as once it was.
I therefore set up a new MySQL database on my server with the hopes of exporting all the data out of my original site and importing it into the new one. This way I can perfect the design and when it's ready to go, I'll just change a link to the new directory and away we go with no downtime. Here's the snag. I dumped all the data from the original MySQL database and then tried to import it through phpMyAdmin into the new one. It got so far and then it said: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 16777216 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 6149094 bytes) in /home/phpmyadmin/public_html/phpMyAdmin/libraries/read_dump.lib.php on line 103 I had this same problem with another site years ago and ended up cutting and pasting a few hundred lines at a time out of the sql file and into the new database - it took hours and I felt a complete idiot doing it because I'm sure there is a way it's meant to be done only I'm blown if I can find it. Can you tell me what to do or point me in the right direction? Many thanks, Dani

Yes, I beleive you can ask your web host to up the limit of your "Allowed memory size"
Alternatley you could export your old DB in parts, like a table, or if one tble has many records in it, you could use a sortable filed (like the key?) to export part of the able at a time. This will give you smaller files to export into the new DB. BTW you have the best signature line ever!

Well I've always been a "stick-it-all-in-there-no-matter-how-big-it-is" type of programmer but it seems this time you might have a point! That's saved me lots of huffing and panting - thanks so much Texxs
