Open source enthusiasts were reeling this week when Sun Microsystems announced that it will be purchasing MySQL AB, the company behind the development of the popular MySQL database software, for US $1 billion.

Call me pessimistic but I dont get the feeling sun purchased MySQL for $1,000,000,000 to continue giving it away for free. I just made backups of the current distribution.

that is even better. Tools to move your database:

MySQL AB :: MySQL Administrator

This is one reason that you shall write a database connection class, so you can fast switch connection.

I was curious about this myself but even if all the current developers decided to take away the GPL licence the current version would still be available. Plus Sun have a pretty good reputation with open source software, especially after releasing the source to the java compiler.

I know what you mean though. I'm guessing they will really have to push the support contract side, that and it may lead to more server sales.
