Question phpMyAdmin - Export & Import

Hi

As I am transferring server, I need to export my existing database (charset=utf- using the phpMyAdmin. Using the default setting and export as SQL.

In my new Server, I use the phpMyAdmin to import the database using the charset as UTF-8. When I check the database that I have import, it turns out in garbage characters.

How do I overcome this problem?

I can choose any of these options to export:

CSV , CSV for MS Excel , Microsoft Excel 2000 , Microsoft Word 2000 , LaTeX , Open Document Spreadsheet , Open Document Text , PDF , SQL , XML

My site is already set as:

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />

Also when I tried importing as Latin-1, it is showing as garbage but when I copied the source and ran it with my html program, it is showing correctly. But this is not when it is showing in the website.

Hope someone can kindly give me advice how to resolve this.

Thank you.

Is it because the characters are in an extended character set? Maybe utf-8 is working because the browser is compensating, it's not really utf-8?

Thumbs up Re: phpMyAdmin - Export & Import

It is UTF-8 as I can see chinese characters.

After a long struggle, I manage to resolve it by re-definite it as binary.

Anyway, it seems that backing up with phpMyAdmin and restoring it will not be the same as default. Now I am using a online database backup to backup and restore. That works.

How do you redefinite it as binary?

and how do you do the online db backup to backup and restore?

THanks.

Are you using the same versions of phpMyAdmin and MySQL on both machines?

Are you using Plesk on both machines? If so you can do a database transfer as opposed to an export/import.

In the phpMyAdmin, under the collation, you can set it as binary. Depending on the version of your phpMyAdmin as lower version does not show the Collation as I have some servers does not show the collation field.

For the online db backup, it is a separate software that I have installed in the server that allows me to backup and restore with the same setting. Unlike using phpMyAdmin, it does not give back the same setting when changing server.
