Looking for software to create a searchable photo database for a site

I'm trying to find some reasonably priced or free software that would help me create an organized, keyword-searchable database of photos for a website. I have no plans to sell photos right now, but I would think I'd like something that has the potential to be enabled for e-commerce as well.
Basically I'm trying to create a free database of stock photography. I know plenty of these exist but I'd like to try my hand at it and populate it with my own archive of photos I've taken over the years.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

I haven't installed or used the Gallery script for some time now, but I was always impressed with it when I used it. I believe it is still licensed under GPL.
