Site Search Engine???

Does anyone know how to set up an internal search engine for a site using a shared host? Or can that be done only on a dedicated server?

I'm familiar with software that enables site searches, but I cannot seem to find one that will work without installing the software on the hosting server.

Is there some php code that I could put on our own pages?

Any ideas?

I use an in sight engine that works using only a simple .xml file. It's called Coffe Cup Flash Search. You simply open the application on your desktop,,, point the wizard to the domain you wish to build a database for,,, and it creates a database for all the pages' content in an .xml file which you then just load onto your directory like any other page. Then by adding a small clip of code you can add the search engine box to any page on your site.

Works great.. couldn't be easier.

Assuming your server has PHP then DGS Search is also very good - and free!

If your hosting account has cPanel X why not use their CGI Entropy Search?

The Fluid Dynamics Search Engine from Fluid Dynamics Software: Perl CGI Scripts is very flexible and powerful and pretty straightforward to install. It is written in Perl, so provided your shared hosting allows you to install your own scripts, ie it has a user-writeable CGI bin, you would be able to use it.

I recently implementd the free version of Site Level (siteLevel - Internal Site Search) on one of my websites.

The search executes on their server, so there is no code to install on your web server.

The results page is fairly easy to customize, and you can re-jig the search box code they give you to fit just about anywhere you like.

In addition, it provides what it calls "slices", which allows you to create a search box that searches user-defined sub-categories of your website.

It also provides reports, but I haven't had a chance to determine their value yet, since I just got started with it.

I found some great little search engines on hotscripts.com - I had to install one on a small site and it used a small Text file, very nice. Have a look around and test them on a subdirectory - then install the one you like best !
