Default Problem in installing & configuring MySQL in Windows 20

Hi,

Iam a newbie to mysql. I have downloaded mysql windows version:4.0.21 from mysql site and installed the same in a standalone windows 2003 server. The system is on a local LAN.But,failed to work with it. When I click on the mysql.exe in /bin directory,it will be taken to a mysql prompt ( command screen ) and on issuing "show databases;", displays only "test".
Neither I can create a database nor perform any other activity. It always gives an error message.I have also tried to access the test database with Mysql administrator, but no major success.

Is there any extra configuration to be done in windows after installing mysql.

Can anyone guide me .

Thanks and looking forward to your suggestions.

Vij

I don't know if what I'm talking here is good for your problem so I apologise if I mislead you ;)

I use a program that installs a local server on my PC for me to view PHP files offline. I heard it can be used for the "outside" world too. The program I talk about is called phpdev. It's a free one and it does everything you need. You just start working the sites and databases.

If it's OK for you I have made a tutorial for installing it and perhaps it would be helpful. How to install a local server. Tutorial for PHPDEV

Typically MySQL installs in Windows as a service, so the first question would be is if MySQL services is running (check Control Panel > Administrative Tools > component Services > Services and look for MySQL and see if it's running.

I manage MySQL using the MySQL Administrator, and if you're just starting out with MySQL, this is what I would recommend for you.

Dear Dataguy,

Thanks for your suggestion. But that's not right.Did you ever think that without the "mysql" service in start mode, how can we see the databases. I have already indicated in my query that I can see only "test"database only.

When we unable to connect/create a database thru command line, how can we use Mysql Administrator, further.

Any other solution(s)..............

Looking forward to receive your suggestion(s)

Thanks,

Vij

Since your discription of the problem is vague I thought I needed to start with the basics. Just trying to help... guess I won't do that again...
