Default Structured Blogging From The Syndicate

The Structured Blogging Initiative was formally announced at the Syndicate Conference yesterday.

Many bloggers have probably seen the various thoughts and posts on Structured Blogging around the Internet. Those concepts have been formalized as the Structured Blogging Initiative, which Marc Canter and others discussed at the conference.

Structured Blogging is a new way to organize blog content at the authoring stage so that readers, aggregators and applications can better navigate, sort through and understand that content.

"The idea is we are going to give you some source code to you the development community," Canter said to WebProNews. "We are shipping plug in code for WordPress and Moveable Type."

Canter built hose tools for PubSub, whose co-founder Salim Ismail hired Canter to do so. "We're expanding the ways we create, share and syndicate content -- and we want to make sure that all the emerging standards are inter-operable," Ismail said in a separate statement on the Initiative.

During the announcement, Doc Searls commented: "If anyone doubts the grassroots exist, take a look at what's happening here."

Jason Klemow of Intellical.com announced at the conference as part of the Structured Blogging Initiative a calendar application allowing you to subscribe and publish events using the tools you are used to, such as Outlook.

Default Structured Blogging and Content Management

Structured Blogging was inevitable and highly desirable. Bloggers who are interested in structured content should consider becoming members of Content Management Professionals http://www.cmpros.org.

CM Pros is an individual membership organization of writers, taxonomists, translators, implementors, globalization experts, developers, and other content management professionals. We're over 600 strong in just one year of existence and our annual summits are a great place for structured blogging and structured authoring/content management professionals to convene and network.

I'm hoping more bloggers will join CM Pros and help us push blogging and content management to new heights.

Default Contradiction in terms

Isn't structured blogging and the "content management professionals" organisation all a contradiction in terms.

Blogs are meant to be radical, independent and chaotic. Or am I showing my 60s-ness?

Default On the contrary

On the contrary, Content Management Professionals (www.cmpros.org) and structured blogging are both interested in streamlining communication, automating unnecessary manual tasks, and structuring information so it can be reused -- instead of wasting time recreating content that exists alrady.

Structured blogging is finding its way into the business world and is an important contribution to content management efforts.
