Question Websites in your will

Has anyone considered what will happen to their websites after their death?

I mean server would stay up being paid for by dd, money would keep going into affiliate and adsense accounts, so I suppose there should be some preparation for such a scenario.

I know its a bit morbid, but I have flu and being a hypochondriac I am just contemplating the imminent demise that I am sure i am facing.

/flu remedies also welcome

I know what'll happen.... Nothing! At least, not until the hosting fees are due.

Hang in there chandrika! You're not gonna die, it just feels that way.

My heart was starting to sink until I read your last line. I was starting to think, "oh no. Please say you're not deathly ill chandrika".

Now I'm somewhat relieved (as most flu cases pass without complications... I've had some bad 'bouts myself. This year in fact).

Anyway, regarding the will. I suppose it depends on how much the site is worth. Unless you already have business partner(s), probably a good idea to at least have a successor lined up, at least verbally. In either case, have a folder(s) lined up with all necessary passwords, memberships info, advertising accounts, dns and authorization numbers, etc. That info should be passed to the successor in the event of an untimely / unanticipated early dismissal to the hereafter.

If one's passing is imminently pending, whereas one already has an idea of a timeframe, get a head start in transferring ownership / control of said website.

Please know I wish you the best of health and success in your speedy recovery of the flu. Drink plenty of liquids and take some supplemental vitamin C, and zinc. (If your doctor agrees)

However, if you do feel it absolutely necessary to begin writing your will, for whatever reason...

...be sure to think of me, your best friend in the whole world.... right?

at the very least you should have an important documents box/safe/safety deposit box that other people know about which has important papers (life insurance policies, bank account info, car titles, etc.) There is no reason why you can't keep some list of your websites and at least some simple instructions of how to access them.

You can put a clause in your will that any domains that you now own or that you will acquire will be given to {son, daughter, mother, father, business partner, etc} - definitely make sure that they go somewhere.

And stop being morbid.....the bane of consciousness is the knowledge of mortality.

well, if my websites would come to a success and it would be humongous or something, surely I will get to hire someone in the future, hopefully before death, to manage it for me, if ever that I will die with or without offspring, it would be up to that next person to keep it up and keep the earnings to himself, or maybe I'll instruct them to donate it to charity instead.lol

A folder with all passwords and details etc is probably the best idea, now I am trying to think of a relative who is able to switch on a computer without calling tech support.

To Jawn Tech I shall bequeath all my worldly warez

I went to Sweden to visit my brother at the weekend and always get sick after going on an aeroplane or coach. I reckon it is because I work from home and so am rarely exposed to anyone elses bugs and then I get in an enclosed space with other people and my immune system just doesnt know what to do. Does anyone else who works from home and so doesnt mix with many people find that when they do they always catch something?

Feeling better today anyway, good nights sleep and lots of honey/lemon drinks. I seem to have averted death.....this time....

I have thought about this very subject just in the past few days. I need to compile an accurate list of passwords, user names, websites and get these things in order. I just am starting to really sett a return on the investment of labor. The sites will be worth keeping around for passive income once I have retired to the ultimate networking community called heaven.

Ah-ha! I now have it in writing. At least I get the warez. So someday, if it's found you had in your possession a cracked version of OpenOffice warez, it's mine.

Sage advice.

Actually did this very thing several years ago in the event I'm "unable" to handle things myself.

Which leads me to wonder...

If I am dead, Adsense money keeps coming into my bank account, but at what point does the bank say

"Hold on - this guy is dead stop sending money to him".

Also - if my bank account is shut, does the Adsense money keep accruing until the my dependants work out how to change the bank account details on my Adsense account?

I guess it does...

Let me have a quick look on Google...

...

Found this on a (ahem) rival forum from "AdsenseAdvisor" :-
"We get quite a few emails about this issue, from both publishers and their surviving relatives. Different people choose to deal with the adsense accounts of deceased publishers in different ways. It's always good to have a plan, but we understand that many people don't. While I can't offer you a "right" answer to the question, know that the team is extremely sensitive to these situations and will work with publishers and their survivors to make sure everything is resolved as smoothly and comfortably as possible."
But I guess it would do no harm to leave a document to your kin with *all* the details of all your accounts in it!

Technically the individual ceases, but on that date the 'estate of {decedent's name} begins' except now instead of now where you do things for yourself, its the executor doing things in trust for your heirs. This is the case even if no formal estate has been established or even an executor appointed. So, that bank account will still take deposits in, google will still pay (and issue tax documents in your social). And there are so many different types of rules/accounts that its impossible to say what precisely would hapen (ie. is the bank account POD, joint account, etc)

At some point it will get transfered to an heir. After a certain period of time, if no heir claims, it will escheat to the state (at least in the US that usually means NJ, NY, CA, etc). There are technically time limits on it, but it happens pretty rarely and the amounts are usually so small the state here doesn't actually have anybody enforcing it and they're just happy to get anything (plus if it were 'ridgid' enforcement the banks would be dissuaded from doing it at all)

That is why you'll see unclaimed property notices in certain newspapers.

And on a side note some people wind up getting into some significant trouble on similar things. In many instances, an elderly person will put a relative's name on a bank account as a facilitator to permit that person to transact business at the bank for the person. Sometimes that account is set up to collect Social Security, Veterans Benefits, other pension benefits, etc.

The person will die and you will usually hear a story where some time later they find grandma or grandpa stuffed in a trunk, freezer, or otherwise 'disposed' of improperly. People will wonder how they can do that to a person they loved and usually the answer is easy; because they didn't want anybody to know they were dead because then those checks would stop coming.

Its not inconceivable that certain checks would still come even after death/proper burial (social security will pay a 'death' benefit at which point they know to stop paying (or to revert payments to a surviving spouse); but sometimes social security numbers get crossed up and other mess ups happen and those checks still get deposited and the children keep spending them digging a bigger and bigger hole each month. The red 'flag' for the government on this one is the people either forget to file income taxes for the person or when their internal auditors look at the 'account' they will see no corresponding Medicare/Medicaid payments to doctors (gee, grandma has been awfully healthy for the last five years)

I do not realy care what happens when I am dead. I have enough to do coping with being alive. Existing is really quite good and worth contemplation and planning for , preparing for when I no longer exist seems totally illogical. I will not even know I am dead. .

Chandrika, get well soon.

Ah thanks, I started this thread before Xmas and recovered from the dreaded lurgy after about one week. So I survived and still have not got round to making any such arrangements, although I probably will (unintentional pun)
