Only saw a few minutes of it but it looked very impressive to me - especially the bit with the large globe.

The opening ceremonies have become a contest to outdo the predecessor. I guess we can see that effect in Egypt's pyramid, they kept getting bigger and bigger and bigger.

Now, whoever is getting the next Olympics is going to have to outdo this one and so on until its just going to become ridiculous.

The torch lighting had several torch pass-alongs until finally a guy was hoisted to the top of the stadium where he was 'running' around the edge of the stadium (actually reminded me of Elliot riding his bicycle in the sky in ET), until he finally got to a 'fuse' which sent a flame into the Olympic flame itself. (I thought at some point, 'ok, let's light this thing already.')

There were elements that were well conceived; but at some point it turned into a spectacle designed only to outdo its predecessors.

NRK Nett-TV - hastighetsmåling (There may be capacity problems, so you may not be able to view it).

It centered around 4 subjects, the 4 Chinese inventions.

The most important to me personally is what will happen after the Olympics.

Agree.

Now, there is a new tragic war drowning in the olympics and a new sex scandal.

I decided not to watch the Olympics. BTW, part of the fireworks were faked.

Olympics opening had fake fireworks footage for TV - New Zealand's source for sport, rugby, cricket & league news on Stuff.co.nz

Haven't you noted the following:
  1. Chinese stock markets had a local top some days ago. Whether it is a global top is another question. A Chinese analyst from Merrill Lynch said that the momentum is going out of the market.
  2. Global inflationary pressure is increasing. Factory prices in USA increasing more than 10 per cent on a yearly basis and Chinese producer prices doing the same. Inflation is also increasing here. Chinese growth rate are damped. Chinese trade surplus decreasing. So two of the greatest locomotives in the world economy have problemes.
  3. We may be at the start of a global depression and in the worst case a global stagflation.

it is but not as worse as in China, and lots of people were to go to China for the olympics that is why this was an issue. Of course as a tourist, you would want to be concern about this.

Not quite. In most other places, you would be compensated. And the pollution is a problem.
