Default my RANT --- Sites with ads --

Does anyone else get tired of seeing sites with freaking google ads all over them.... seriously what the hell... I understand people need to make money.... but I don't understand running ads for your competition on your site.... it makes ZERO sense to me.

I keep seeing these sites asking for reviews.... then when you mention something about ad overload they get pissed off....

What are you guys' thoughts?

So, what's your opinion on adverts in newspapers, magazines, on TV and radio?

Most people accept adverts. A lot of people like adverts. I think webmasters need to understand that adverts can be an important part of the website. . Getting the balance wrong can and does piss people off, showing the wrong ads can do the same.

When we mention ad overload, maybe we should offer a better way to display the adverts. . . Sites will not make money if they get the balance wrong. I like to think we only piss people off when we intend to do so.

Lets avoid accidents. If a site has no content - let us just piss those webmaster off, If the site has simply an overload, but good content - lets point them to a better result, and not piss them off... No two sites are the same.

AdSense ads on a page can be a nuisance when they're positioned in the same place you'd expect a page's main content.

However I find it quite intriguing to see how AdSense Blocks are styled from site to site.

The most annoying adverts are the ones that come up in the page (Channel4.com and thesun.co.uk are prime examples) and the talking emoticons advert.

I used to like the "make your website speak" advert when you could run the example off the advert and make it say whatever you wanted!

I was looking at starting a thread very similar to this. For the most part just to type / speak what is on my mind from other articles, threads and discussions I have read on this forum and others. There are alot of people slamming the creators of sites that are only used for adsense.

There are threads recently posted in the site review that have gotten slammed by some people and complimented by others. I understand why some webmasters get upset when you slam their site when they know and they assume you can see it is only an adsense site, and that is the only reason the site exists and was created. I am not siding with them because I do think it is totally wrong and futile to get into an argument of any sort over the internet. That is one compelling reason that I really like forums. You can be honest, you can be open, you can be as dumb or as smart as you like. If you piss somebody off, who cares? As long as you said how you were feeling and you gave your honest opinion and your honest feelings.

Not everybody is going to like every site. With that said, there has been numerous threads and discussions on link selling. Some people agree, some people say it is unethical. Well here is my two cents on all of it. I look at an internet site as virtual property. And like real property, if there is a way that I can make money from it, why shouldn't I? I don't care if it is an adsense site, a directory, or a search engine. When you buy a link on Google, it doesn't add to your link popularity. The purpose of buying a link is, and I am speaking of adwords, is to get your site out there and get your site known. So I sell them a link on my site. It does the same thing for the webmaster buying the link. It gets their site out there and their site publicized, especially if I run a popular and well known site.

Do you think the person selling the link cares, about Google's algorithm and Google's issue with selling the link as it messes with their algorithm and their popularity scheme? Why should they let Google dictate how they make money on their site? Yes I know I just p****d some people off. But is MSN Live bending over backwards, making it so Google adwords do not show up in their search? How many times have you searched Google and found eBay auctions that only run for about a week appearing within the top 10 results?

And you are spending money on SEO trying to get your site there! I am not saying that it is right or it is wrong to sell links. I am not saying that adsense sites are right or wrong. And I am not trying to get into a Google bashing discussion (that is too easy). All I am trying to say is if you review a site and you do not like it, and you think it is c**p, say so. But my point of view is the person running the site is trying to make money. Maybe they are not as talented as others and can create or have the time to run a blog, a forum or a retail sales site. Maybe they are looking for fast money. So be it, it is their site.

Too much weight is put on Google these days. I saw another thread in this forum about a month ago that suggested new sites go out and join many forums and ask your site to be reviewed or post a comment with your url to your site on blogs and I present to you...which is worse or more unethical? Selling links, running an adsense site, or spamming your site across forums and blogs for no other reason than to get backlinks? Yes I know I ruffled some feathers. That isn't why I wrote this. I wrote this so maybe you can see, no matter if you like the site or not, be honest about it, but while you are at it try and point out some good things. And if you really get p****d off, there is always that big red X in the upper right hand corner.

OK I feel better now. Now on a lighter note...who is ready for Christmas??

I have no problem with newspapers or magazines as they usually have the ads separated from content.

I have a problem with sites that are overloaded with adsense ads. Especially sites that are advertising their competition in the adsense ads. It makes no sense to me.

On sites that are parked I expect to see ads... thats not the deal. It is only sites that are really overloaded or advertising their competition. I don't get it.

If I went in Pizza Hut would I see ad's for Little Ceasars? or Dominos? No. So what sense does it make if I own a web design business and run ads for heritage web design and some other big spenders on google?

I totally agree with you. How can you run a successful business when you are sending your traffic to your competition... usually before they even get a chance to have a good look at your site!

Adsense is good for webpublisher sites that are information oriented, but if you're trying to sell a product or service your entire focus should be on converting your visitors to customers.

They do not always. Advertorials are a case in point.

And you can block rival advertisers from your site, I think?

I don't know about blocking advertisers but you can use negative keywords to achieve the same effect.

I would worry if the 2 major pizza companies haven't done so on their websites or was that just an example flsurfkarma?
