Default A Spelling Note to ALL Americans

Quote:
From WebPro News, 28 Feb -- Editor's Note: With Google loosing rights to GMail in the UK, it now faces the possibility of loosing GMail here in the US thanks to the IIR. What do you think should happen?
When even the Editors of WebPro News don't know how to spell, it is a very sad commentary on the education system in the USA.

Just for your edification and education, these are the meanings of two totally different words:

Loose: sounds like 'moose'
means: not secured (tied up for our American cousins)
Example: The dog got loose from the kennel because the lock fell off.

Lose: sounds like 'ooze'
means: unable to retain ownership - in this case
Also means: misplace, etc
Example: With Google losing rights to Gmail in the UK,....

Got it now?

Of course, you all know the difference between its and it's, don't you?

Default What value?

What value does this post have? Someone makes a typo and you feel the need to post to the world?

Do you not have anything better to do with your time than attempt to rationlize just how poor the US education system is based on one typo.

Come on, please find something to do with your time. Perhaps working to end world hunger or child abuse.

Your analysis would is as in line as me saying all men in Thailand are unable to do web design based on the 50 errors on your home page alone.

Default Wowsers...

Why don't you focus on fixing your 50 errors, on your home page, than my single typo? Or the typo from an article?

I presume you've never posted a typo in anything you've done?

Get real.

Let he who is w/o error cast the first stone. Typo's are typo's, and everyone knows a bit of Typonese!

Go one day, look at one site and tell me you don't find a minimum of one error. Find multiple errors - more then 10 - and then a post about errors would be in order.

Bringing the typo to the attention of WebProNews would have required one simple email, not a public post. I'm sure they would have thanked you for it and life would have went on.

Marc

Chris's spelling might be a bit up the creek, but at least he doesn't have a fetish with colons (:)

Sorry to disagree with you, but we're not talking about a typo or a spelling error...just to be pedantic.

I often see Americans misusing words like 'lose/loose', 'their/there', 'its/it's', etc. It's a common problem, so I felt a post in the forum would help more people.

The point is, Chris, or whoever wrote the original newsletter, spoilt (British spelling -- spoiled for Americans, ok?) the whole purpose of his article.

No matter what we write for public consumption, it should be as perfect as possible. We have spell checkers. Why not use them? Bad spelling and poor word usage shout out Unprofessional!

Instead of attacking the messenger, how about attacking the problem?

I personally agree to that. My intention was not to start a flame. Sorry if my first, a little polemic post, had that effect.

But the post is posted in the breakroom where I hope that there are a lot of dialects and languages.

So may be you should have posted it in another subforum.

What about the marketing forum and then as a general problem.

Ludvig Holberg, a famous Danish / Norwegian writer, wrote a play "Erasmus Montanus". That lead to a term "Erasmus Montanus-logic".

It goes like this:
Erasmus Montanus: Just arrived from higher education in Denmark. (That was very exclusive at the time the play was written in 1722).

Mor Nille: His mother.

Erasmus Montanus: I will prove that Mor Nille is a stone.

Mor Nille: I am not a stone.

Erasmus Montanus: A stone can not fly. Mor Nille can not fly.

Conclusion: Mor Nille is a stone.

Mor Nille: Crying.

Afterwards he proved that Mor Nille was not a stone, and she stopped crying.

P.S.
Personally, if I should study economics / finance today, and was clever enough to be approved, I would have preferred a University in USA or Switzerland.

marc, the ed's note was written by raf and regardless of your justification, real or imagined, there are much better ways to handle this than running to a public forum and pointing out the shortcomings of others.

judging by your responses, it's pretty obvious you've made very few mistakes in your life, but i wonder the two or three times you did, did someone flog you in public setting?

Well, that duz it!

If we weren’t in the break room I’d take this thread a little more seriously although it really should be taken to the trash, seriously!

Marc,… What were you thinking? Oh, you weren’t thinking. Well, that is excusable, it happens to everyone occasionally.

What would you say if the editors of WebProWorld were educated in Thailand?

Go drink a glass of milk, take a long nap and get over it. Then come to the realization that your website is hilariously unprofessional and you are coming off as a bellowing hypocrite.

Keep up the great work Chris.

C'mon Marc let's save the world through public flogging!

Down with spell check up with dictionaries!

Let the public humilation begin!

Let's grab everyone! Employers, employee's, friends, family and peers. Let's drag them out into the street so the entire world can point at them and laugh hysterically for being...

Human

That just oozes professionalism. Count me in.
