In reading Jason's post Survey Says The Internet Will Eat You I was reminded of something I saw on the news a few weeks ago. Apparently Britain is turning into Big Brother and watching your every move.
There are cameras everywhere on the streets and now they can TALK BACK! Imagine walking down the street, minding your own business, when a voice from above tells you to pick up trash or yells at you for jay-walking. You can't even pick your nose without fear of being video-taped!! Authorities saymost people don't mind the cameras and it keeps the streets safe. Personally, I'm torn on the issue. In theory, the only people who would object to these measures are those who want to do unsafe or immoral things. I'm not one of those people, so why should it bother me. Maybe I've read/watched too much science-fiction. I can't help think about novels like 1984 or Brave New World, and the movies Brazil and THX 1138...extreme views of the future, to be sure, but is this not the next logical step to reach such a future? If we go here, its only a matter of time before someone takes it just a little further... What are your views on this?

Well, I have the same views on that as I do on the recently passed bill in the US that says I'm not allowed to gamble online.
We can't feed the people in our cities but we're worried about installing cameras that allow someone to watch us do anything and everything. Governments today are simply out of touch with reality. I can't even fathom what could be done with the money that the US government wastes alone each year on things just like you described. We'll probably spend 100-200 million to have a team that will investigate the banks for transactions to overseas gambling institutions, but we can't put aside money to provide food and clothing for the millions of starving homeless people on our streets. I'm ready to find an Island, buy it, put up my own bungalo and call it quits.

Do you remember the time when:
George Orwell's - "1984" was a scary book? Others ask; Do you remember the time when: School children didn't have to worry about someone walking in at any time and taking them out? I'd have to answer: Yes I remember when privacy wasn't so violently violated...but I don't remember ever having to safeguard it so close. I also remember when the only real stupid thing you had to do in school was duck under your front heavy school desk, just in case the US came under nuclear attack by Russia. Ken |

Why is it that people must make life so difficult?
I think it's true from Web Designers to Politicians to Sports Stars. People can't simplify and now we feel we have to worry about everything. Technology should simplify life, not confound it. Tiffany: I don't think my wife would appreciate you joining me, but I won't tell if you don't.
