Default What hobby should I pick up?

Anyone got a suggestion for a hobby? I need something to keep me away from here a few hours a day. Things have been slow on the musical front for me lately (living in a smaller town outside of Omaha, I don't really have anyone to jam with), I joined a bowling league, and I play tennis every so often. I also bought an RC plane, but I don't get an opportunity too often to fly it (Nebraska is fairly windy, and RC planes don't really like that.)

Anyone got a suggestion?

Brian.

You could collect something. Say bubble gum cards

You could record music, movies

You could take some type of martial arts

You could join a basketball league

Take long walks, ride a bike

Call your friends

Work on an old car/truck

Start another business, one that is fun

adopt me? :)

Play with your kid more

You can try building something like a table or a small drawer. Woodwork can be fun. You can also try gardening if you like plants. It's nice to take care of another living thing.

I can try building something? But where would I ever get the tools to do so? Oh, I know... ;-)

Actually, I don't have anything to build right now. I've done plenty of that already. I might be building a new computer desk (that'll hold more of my musical gear), but other than that I don't have anything to build.

My wife takes care of the gardening, so I won't be doing that either.

I did get my golf clubs out and cleaned up... maybe I'll try that again.

Brian.

Try paintball. That's what I do when I get the chance. It gives you a little exercise and you get to relieve some stress. Nothing like harmlessly shooting at people to make the day go a little better. ;)

If you need to relieve alot of stress try freezing the paintballs first. :)

Good idea. I'll need to be careful, though. We had someone shoot our dog with one a few years back. Not a big deal, except he was supposed to be going to a dog show that weekend. Nothing the judges like better than blue fur. :-)

I'll see if I can find a place to pretend to shoot webhost1, wrmineo, ctabuk, adamwebdesign, and I'll even pretend one is you, rah. Thanks for the suggestion.

If you have any kind of pond/lake/creek nearby, get an RC boat! Not only are they a lot of fun, but you can fly little message flags on them and send them toward interesting looking people to break the ice for making new friends!

We have some state lakes around here, but with all the toxic algae around here, I wouldn't want to put anything in those lakes. I guess I'll just need a bigger pool. :-)

If you're into taking walks or exploring with a GPS, try geocaching, or GPS stash hunting. We're just getting into it. http://www.geocaching.com

Go to the batting cage, it's always fun to hit some baseballs really hard.

Rent a kayak and see if it's something you'd like to do more often; it so, buy one. Kayaking is something you can do alone and you can get just about anywhere.

You ever seen pictures of the Platte River? That's what I've got around here. Ick. I'll stick to the airboat on that. Much too muddy to get into that water.

Those sound like fun, but I'll need someone to try it with me. Are you volunteering catbuk?

The reason I wanted to shoot you is because games like that are best shared with those you consider friends. Since you're not around here, I was going to pretend it was you. Gee... you'd think I was going to try bring you harm or something. ;-)

Hmmm, guess I'm used to clean, clear water. We're spoiled up here, you can usually see to the bottom of most rivers and lakes...Hey, there's a hobby for you - start cleaning the Platte River!

Walking/hiking can be energizing and mind-clearing activities, plus you get away from the monitor for awhile. It's Cheap, too.

Walking? Hiking? Can I take my laptop? LOL.

I've been trying to get the dogs out every day for a while. They're pugs, so they don't go too far. I suppose I could go to our local wooded area and go for a walk. Just so long as the local legends aren't true...

Sure you can take your laptop on those walks. Make sure you have 2 of them though. One in one hand tends to tire out that side faster than when you have one in each hand.

As for the legends. I think I heard that the Platte River Mud Monster was further up the creek than where you live now.

Wow Brian... what instrument do you play? style / etc... I've been playing the drums for 18 yrs now and I don't get to jam nearly enough anymore either :( And the RC plane and wind... Make up some flyers for band recruitment and start the Omahainians :p

Omaha has quite a music scene... many are calling it the next Seattle. 311, Bright Eyes and The Faint (among others) have made a name for themselves from around here. Slipknot was from just down the road too (Des Moines, but they played in Omaha a lot.) However, I'm living in Fremont and just working in Omaha. Fremont is very small town.

As for instruments, I play many. I played most everything in the brass section in school, can play keys, drum when needed (these are my toys when the boys are alseep), but my main instrument has strings. I play 4, 5, 6, or 7 at a time. The last band I was in (cover band, but it was fun anyway) played everything from Clapton to Disturbed. I tend to wander to the heavy side, then try to make it more melodic and tame it down a bit.

Golf frustrates me. I can hit those 300+ yard drives straight down the middle, then next hole can't make it to the 175 yard green. I guess I need more practice to get some consistency.

I'm looking at starting a shopping engine to ease the boredom. Anyone want to work on the presentation side of it? I enjoy the back-end database / data manipulation / data acquisition stuff more.

Brian.

What about joining local evironmentalists, seems your area needs it. Just be careful not to let anyoneknow your a web guru or youŽll get stuck with upgrading the website. It could be fun, make and distribute flyers the old fashioned way to raise awareness, lobby for better environment standars, chain yourself to a power plant.

Right... we'll just keep going upstream until we find the area putting all the mud into the river. Or is that the area creating turbulence...

Anyway, we have a decent group that's making the town nice, but the river is just a mess from all the mud. That's why we only put airboats on it. You can't see more than about a foot into it, but it isn't a whole lot deeper than that in areas.

Brian.

Well if the shark thing doesn't work out Brian....

You could always try 'pick up sticks w/ yer butt cheeks' (all you need is a set of pick up sticks, a group of close friends, and alot of patience!)
It's alot more fun when you involve the opposite sex! LOL

Years ago I thought I invented something, turns out I didn't (it was already invented) I was going to make fitted sheets (available in all bed size's) With the Twister board screen printed on the fitted sheet and sew a spinner into the foot of the bed...

My grandpa was an inventor... My mom actually has the original patent for skiball (the game idea was sold to mattel and changed a bit, the game originally was played with ping pong balls and had a small catapult to get the balls to the 100,50,25,and 10 spots) he also invented one of the first toothpaste tube rollers :P
