Default Smile! You've been arrested and featured on webcam!

Can you imagine being arrested then discovering that ever move you make - from the booking process to moving around in the holding cell - is shown to the world on a webcam?

I can't imagine being arrested, but I would raise the roof if I discovered the whole internet world could view me going through it all!

It has happend though. An Arizona Sheriff argued that: "...Webcasts deterred crime and showed the public how jails work."

Full Story: Lock 'em up and throw away the Webcam

The court ruled that it's unconstitutional. Is it?

It's the freakin 9th Circuit.
I would bet no other Circuit would find against the sheriff.
Sorry wenwilder. On this one I'm going with the sheriff.

I'm half and half on this one. I can see how it would be a deterrant, but I can also see how it could be a major problem for some.

If they arrested a first time offender who is later declared innocent - then they are marked as being guilty from the beginning.

A large part of me says why should we worry about the rights of those who were arrested. They didn't worry about anyone elses rights when they commited the crime.

You'd have to place me on the fence on this one. It just depends on the case.

Just ask my wife's cousin who just spent 18 years in prison (on a life sentence) and was finally let out when the DNA testing proved he didn't do it.

I'm all for victims rights...
but it kills me when a man has his reputation distroyed because he is ACCUSSED of rape (innocent until proven guilty remember) and his name is all over the media...but the woman can remain anonymous whether she is telling the truth or not.

Publish both names or none!!!!

So we should remain anonymous until convicted?
I think the public trial kind of implies that the public knows you have been accussed. The web cam makes your arrest "more" public, but it always has been public. It's a matter of degree isn't it.
Esiegel, I have never been a fan of rape shield laws, the blue dot lady at the Kennedy rape trial was the ultimate in stupid press tricks.

Hey All,
Sheriff Joe is very popular here in Arizona. He also has a jail called "tent city", it's literally a bunch of tents outside. Remember Arizona hits 100-110 regularly in the summer months.

He also makes his inmates wear pink underwear and eat green bologna. No joke! The inmates that clean up the side of the roads are on a chain gang.

I know a couple people that "NEVER WANT TO GO BACK TO JAIL", one had a DUI, she was on the jail cam, went to tent city, ate green bologna, and no longer drinks and drives. She didn't care about the fine and losing her license for awhile but she sure did hate sleeping outside and eating green bologna. And was very embarrassed when we told her we saw her on the jail cam....She got to keep the pink boxers.
