Default Your View of Australia

As an Australian, I often wonder how those of other countries perceive us.

Please tell me which country you are from and what perceptions you have of Australia and Australian's.

Just a paragraph on the first things that come to mind would be fine.

I will enjoy reading the responses.

Some Info

Can we deduct points for anyone who says that Sydney is the capital & roos wander the streets? Or, if they mention Paul Hogan, Suburus & Fosters or Steve Irwin & 'crikey' those crocs?? ;-)

Hi

Personally, I love Australia and everything about the country. I have a cousin in Melbourne, and so visit Oz quite often. My next trip is in January next year for about 2 and a half months. This will be my 5th visit. I've pretty much seen most of Australia - Sydney, Melbourne, Queensland, the Barrier Reef, Ulluru (or Ayers Rock - whatever you wish to call it), Alice Springs. I have'nt been to Cairns or Darwin - up north yet.

Cairns was an incredible place in the late 80s and 90s I lived there and raised my children in that area. Then we moved to the Byron Bay area, it's all idyllic though, bluest of blue oceans, incredible skies and sandy beaches, it was paradise... Now I'm here in America's mid-west --- what happened!? LOL...

Cheers

I was in Australia last November (Just after England won the Rugby World cup - sorry I had to get that in!) it's an amazing place, and the people are so friendly.

I've never been to any place in the world and have walked in to a pub, by myself (sad I know!) and have someone who I've never met in my life just strike up a conversation. You go to a pub in England, and they would rather walk over you then say Hello!

My journey started off in Sydney, Port Douglas, and then Tasmania - it lasted four weeks, and was the BEST four weeks of my life!

Darren :)

So what is the answer...I am usually pretty good at trivia, but I have no clue.

Australia is always a place that I have wanted to visit. I seems like an incredible place when you compare it to New Jersey...

This is pretty sad guys! Not one mention of West Aussieland!

There you go MrLen... an interesting point that we already knew for the most part...
Most people start their holiday on the east coast, and never make it to the west coast. And such a shame too! They really are missing out on the most diverse scenery, best beaches & prettiest city (Perth) in Oz!

While studying for a semester in Budapest, Hungary, I met several Australians who were backpacking across Europe. They were extremely nice and fun to hang with. We found ourselves chatting and singing in wine caves for hours.

I have yet to meet an Australian who didn't know how to have a good time - good conversationalists and always good drinks :)

Would love to get there someday!

Am hoping to get across the ditch at some stage this year.

Have family in Sydney but also want to do a bit of a trip around.

So at some stage people might like to let me know the best parts of Aussie to visit. Especially Western Aussie since you are feeling so left out Matauri.

Cheers

Yeah...they always forget about us in the west ;-(

I'm a little biased ellar, I dont think there is one part prettier than the other. Even the desert is awesome to see. I think its the minerals in our rocks & soils that set some pretty amazing contrasts in different lights.

And how can you go wrong with an island this size surrounded by water :-)

Is it true that people ride aroung on kangaroo's there?

Ha Ha Just kidding.
I've been there a few times, just Western Australia, Perth area. I really enjoyed my visits. Much more layed back world compared to America. Everyone is always in such a hurry over here. I think us Americans could learn a lot from the rest of the world.

Do you mean the Original Visistors?
Or their, ah, 'guests'?
For some reason, that I should check to see if it is actually true sometime (like know ;]), I always think about the supposed group that formed the first link in the chain gang of the eventual inhabitants lineology!

I like it ;o]

BTW, I hail from one of the western colonies, North of the 'New English' ones.
