Pic of your desktop?
I thought it would be interesting to see how organised (or otherwise :P) peoples desktops are.
I'll set an example then :P

Okay, you win!
I keep Legolas on my desktop and not much else. (why ruin a good thing?) ;)
(Actually I am extremely organized, everything in its place...yadda yadda...I just like typing Legolas) ;) lol
You still win though splinter, that is the most organized and cleanest desktop I have seen in... a very long time!!! How do you do it? :)

You still win! LOL...I'm too embaressed to show a pic of mine, because it is covered by e-postit notes ....everywhere! But underneath the clutter is meant to be my Nemesis image which I alternate with my Stargate one.
I dont think mine has been as clean as Splinters ever, except for immediately after I reformat :-)

I just make sure that no icons get onto my desktop unless I really use them.
I have organised all the icons into sections (sad but it keeps it organised :P). The games section (bottom right) only contains the icons to games I am playing regularly so that changes very often.
All of my site making stuff is kept in the quick-launch bit (or whatever it's called, the part next to the start menu) as you may have noticed :P

Hi Splinter. Good Topic, I like it! :o)
I did not take a screenshot. Anyway you will see that I agree with you that desktops should be kept as cleaner as possible. (We should go help Matauri having her desktop organized) Happy Sundays,

To icon or not to icon, that is the question
I'm still trying to figure out "why" one should have a vacant desktop. Afterall, that's why all of those nifty lil icons were invented -- to be used! Heck, I've even got files in the folders on my desktop (and folders within folders) -- so I can find the blame things when I actually NEED to. OKOK -- I didn't actually need all the icons that I have stored on my Quick Launch--I deleted them <sob>.
Sheesh! Peer group pressure!

LOL Your computer actually has a very logical tree style filing system and if you right click on the start button and choose "explore" from the fly out menu you will see that you really have access to it all.
I feel like my computer is not as efficient if I store stuff on the desktop so I actually use the windows folders like "My Pictures" "My Music" etc. found in "My Documents.” I keeps everything tidy and in a place where it can easily be retrieved or searched for.

"vacant" would be overkill, but the more you have there the less effective it is. If you have to pick the right icon out of 50 it isn't the same as picking out of... well I actuall do have over 20 - but in groups: filesystem icons on in the upper left
remote systems in the upper right
important data sources are under those
Stuff I'm prepping for distribution is upper middle
temp/in-progress stuff is lower middle
applications are lower right
If all of these were in a jumble or if there were many more, I'd do just as well to navigate to what I need through the actual filesystem...

First of all...I can't understand how you can work with nothing on your desktop...
Second...when I took this screen shot and dropped it onto my desktop...It took me 6 minutes to find the it so I could post it.
BTW...my actual desktop is just as bad...piles of papers, etc.
But I work better this way!

I'm busted - but I still have room for 7 more, or
until I can't tolerate the slowing down any longer.
Yes, we work with client files on our desktop and then transfer to the appropriate folders when issues
are resolved, when projects are completed, or when the 1024x768 resolution screen is completely full:

Guess I should discipline myself to a "briefcase",
just never liked the word, though.
I could have cheated and raised the monitor resolution to 1600x1200!

That's better - still have plenty of room.

Cindy,
I like the post-it notes. Is that a Microsoft feature or separate software?
I've never run across electronic post-its for the desktop rummaging around in my closet before.
Previously, when multiplexing many projects I used a slotted leather folder with different colored 3"x3" cards. This system is very useful for managing multiple projects simultaneously, and remembering where you were when you come back. - I would like to have the same in an digital version.
Thanks,
Ken

I actually try to move stuff off my desktop on a regular basis, since my backups do not include it.

Superior Mental Health!
My desktop during lunchtime break.
On the bright side: my mental health is great! No OCD here! And no one has ever accused me of being anal!
But what would a feng shui expert say?

followup on desktop
I thought that I'd do a follow up on my previous posting. I'd forgotten that desktop loads into RAM during startup; and, as long as it's shortcuts aka icons-only, it's not that big of a deal. However, in the discussion, something triggered deep within and I realized that I'd been fighting assorted start-up and program-load problems. So, one of the first things that I did to start attacking my problem was to move all of the folders containing files off desktop into a new folder c:\desktop cleanup. This removed about a lot of stuff that was loading directly into RAM, no matter whether I was using it or not.
Some of these problems start occurring after the last HotFix(es) from MS that I installed last week; however, I'm not ready to uninstall them, yet.
