Don't you just...
Don't you just hate it when you come up with a good name for your site, you look up the domain and find it's being used as a search engine that no-one will ever use?
I thought I'd be able to use hideout.com but it redirects to some rubbish search engine. I think this sort off thing should be banned because...well....just because it annoys me :P

Eithics ? What is it in the Industry.
Hello Splinter,
It is better than the worst one I encountered. When I wanted to get the name for my site, I was taken to another site that holds the rights for an abandoned site. And this site hold the name I wanted, but learnt it was abandoned one. The auction bid begins from US$1000/- minimum! So, I gave up and stuck to my - (difficult to pronounce) - name!

YourName.something
Yeah, I felt that way when I had the "brainstorm" of "http://rumormill.com/" well, that's freedom for you! Still, there seems to me to be a real need for domain names we ought to have a right to.... well cant have it be our real names, to many John Smiths.....
But back to your point?
Don't rock the boat too much, the only real way to cut down on frivolous name ownership is to raise the price way, way up. Shhhhhh!
let's do something useful, how can we systematize a method that guarantee's everyone (in America..., or on Earth...) a unique human readable domain name (no 57 character alpha numeric strings...)something with your name and a modifier(s).... Come on guys, come up with some ideas.
Name + (part of) Home address? Phone Number & ...something?
Bad idea's but what other unique handles (public ones) do you all have?

Sounds Good Idea!
DosDog,
It is a good idea but the phone number begins with same digit in several country. Name, Pincode or postal zip and part of phone number could help. But who is going to help us in fixing this small problem, as they are busy reaping $$$$!
Already the IP addresses and the Server DNS etc. on the numerical identity based. I think it would make more sense, if they adopt the IP address of each individual to own their domain.
There is a mad rush for domain names when some of the big corporates merging or joing hands, then even a small time net surfer blocks these possible names to sell it for highest bid! This way many unknown individuals hit the headlines and made millions. A kind of fraud, literally, but legally, they are within the frame & doing fine! That's called Internet intellectuals!

I hear you!!!
I don't have an idea on how to solve this problem, but I just wanted to rant about these domain campers. My last name is Jonas and I've tried to get jonas.whatever.
.net is taken by one of those stupid search engines and they won't respond to inquiries
.com is taken by some service that allows people to use the name for an email address
.org is taken by a dude (a nice dude) in sweeden who isn't using it for anything (and hasn't in years) but won't sell it for a reasonable price.
AAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGG!!!

Got an idea!
hjuan99,
You just can add only one letter to your name anywhere you like, and try. You got your domain! Imitating? No that's not possible in the internet industry. It is just okay to be different, atleast in letter!!

I think what we need, is a unique extension. Something like [dot]name "yourname.name" it could perhaps be postal like "yourname.yourcity.yourstate.name" or how's about "yourname.11570.zip"... or "yourname.631.222.2222.num" just to make them unique to every individual. this way everyone would have a lifelong stable predictable domain an e mail address.
I know this invites spam and other abuse,,, but doesn't everything?
and the benefits.....

hjuan99,
You are whining too much.
jonas.cc is available.
What is wrong with jonasfam.com ?
I have used barnesfamily.com for years as Barnes Engineering took barnes.com long ago.
My brother-in-law's last name is Tandy. No chance that tandy.com would be avaialabel as Radio Shack took it many moons ago. So, he settled on tandyhome.com.
You could change you surname to something that is available in a .com TLD.

Yes, still you can have your name!

Yes, barring few familiar names with .com, .net, .org and .edu, most other extensions are available for one. The only hitch is, everybody want only the popular extensions and think on the line 'why I have to settle for these less familiar ones',.
For one, http://bravenet.com (Dave & Brad)is offering very attrative names with fast URL direct mode such as devoted.to, dedicated.to etc. One can try there out to grab a name of his/her choice. (But, for free name grabbers, this will be annyoing to many, as bravenet will put a popup or popunder advt. everytime one tries your URL; But if you register, this is eliminated). And you got your Name!

I've been trying to come up with other names. Think I've found a decent one. I'm sure I'll let you here about it in the future :P
(Oh, I just noticed that this is on the main page :D I've never had a post get there before.)
