Default USB connecting problem

Guys 'n' Gals,

A month or so ago I tried to plug my Sandisk USB pen into my PC (XP SP2) to download some photos. The Usb pen said it was being charged but the PC seems to have no inkling that it's connected. I can't force it to pick it up when it can't see anything there at all. I've not been able to connect it to the PC since.

Can anyone suggest what might (not) be happening?

Thanks,all

How do you know that the "usb pen said it was being charged" ? Do you have a LED on the device ?

Does the usb key appears in your "device manager" with a yellow question mark beside.

That was weird, I always get a message or something whenever I insert a new USB or any device to my PC. It would either show a message of installation for the new hardware or that the device is unknown...

Try connecting the pen to another USB port. It is possible that the port you are using has "locked" to another connected device, or there may be another problem with that port. I would first suggest connecting the device to a USB port on the back of the computer, as these are generally hardwired to the motherboard. Sometimes the front USB ports are not all connected or connected properly. I have also seen cases where an internal fan has damaged the wires running from the front USB ports to the motherboard.

If the problem persists when connecting to another USB port, try connecting the device to another computer. This should tell you if the problem is with the device or the computer. If the other computer does recognize the drive, you may need to reinstall the drivers on the original computer, or try additional troubleshooting to find the cause of the issue. If the other computer does not recognize the device, it is possible the thumb drive itself is damaged.

First, you need to do is to check whether your USB is correctly installed. Then after that, plug in your USB pen, if you dont see any message pop up, check your USB cable. If the solutions above did not solve your problem, i think that your USB pen is broken.

Some USB ports are powered differently than others also - went half insane when my exciting new USB HD "was DOA" but after a period realized that the docking station USB ports were lower throughput voltage and thus wouldn't charge or power certain devices (or even recognize them), whereas those on the laptop itself were desktop-like. As to why...

Some USB ports are not powered at all! Took me ages to find out why I could not power up a device with my computer at work! An old computer.
