Default Slang/Regional Expressions

Often, I come across a regional/slang/country specific expression that leaves me scratching my head. No, not scratching because of "cooties", only girls have those . So I thought it might be fun to list and define some.

Got a regional/slang/country specifc expression or want one defined? Here's the place for it!

Woogedy Adj. (wuh-geh-dee)

A shopping cart in a grocery store that has one or more wheels that spin around in circles when you push it. A "woogedy" cart.

A person who normally walks fine but because of a temporary "impairment" stumbles or wobbles. "A bit 'woogedy' are we?"

So chime in! Ask for a definition of an expression that leaves you thinking "Huh?!?! What does THAT mean?!?! Or share your own!

Dave

You didn't mention which region that is from... should probably stay away from there.

There are loads of dialect words in the English Midlands.

Shropshire is good for these.

"Buggy 'ell! I bost me yed!"

Translates to: "Bloody hell! I injured my head!"

Also, if you are left handed like me you are described as being "caggy 'onded."

And scrawp means scratch, as to scratch yourself. As in: "You were scrawping so much, I thought you must have fleas!"

And here's one for you to puzzle over

"Yo frit me to jeth!"

Have fun!

"Croust" is an interesting word - well, I think so. It is from Cornwall (south west England), and means something like "packed lunch" (at around 12 we stops work and 'as a bit a croust). In other parts of the UK the same thing would be called "snap".

Norwegian:

Demokratur = "A political system moving slowly from democracy ("demokrati") to dictatorship ("diktatur")".

Burma or Myanmar?

It is still called Burma in Norway.

Hopefully, the political system developes into democracy with a minimum of violence.

P.S: Look at the toolbar page rank of the site. It shows that it is not new. Happy birthday Google.
