Mozilla Firefox downloads problem
Hi Everyone
I have encountered a really odd problem with downloads from Mozilla Firefox v.2 latest software upgrade.
I have two laptops sitting next to each other both running Mozilla Firefox. Both are on version 2. Both have the latest upgrade. My wife's desktop has the same latest version.
One of the laptops and the desktop function entirely correctly on downloads. All three have the same download settings: i.e. show download progress window and close window on completion.
One laptop runs XP Pro, the other two computers run XP Home. They are all accessible from each other.
The laptop with XP Home has Firefox download problems:
1. The download window does not open and close per settings.
2. If I open it manually there is nothing displayed even when there is a download in progress.
3. ftp downloads, rar and zip files with software upgrades, and email attachments all download correctly and go into the correct directories.
4. Save web page is fine.
5. Right mouse - save image to - all fail to download - nothing, zilch, zippo.
... and as I work in advertising and marketing that is a big problem. I can right mouse, copy image, and paste as new image in PSP (I use version 6, steam-driven, but it's all I need).
Any ideas folks please? Your help would be really appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Re: Mozilla Firefox downloads problem
The first thing I would suggest would be a full uninstall and reinstall. It is possible that an update did not apply successfully and that is what is causing the issue. A full, fresh install would solve that problem. If the problem continues, there may be a permissions issue in one of the folders where the program settings are stored.

Re: Mozilla Firefox downloads problem
I am not facing any problem with downloads but a different problem with the updated firefox...
Means firefox closes down automatically... then after runing drwtsn32, i find the following error:
C:\\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe c0000005 <nosymbol>(1891B08D)
C:\\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe c0000005 uxtheme!GetThemeTextExtent(5AD72F76)
Thus anyone else is also having any such problem or is it a PC problem.
Any expert opinion would be highly appreciated.
Thanks & Regards -- Ann

Re: Mozilla Firefox downloads problem
Ann's problem, I can see being something corrupt in the installation or update. What I would do in that situation would be to download a full installation of Firefox v2 (not an update or upgrade) and try reinstalling the software. If that didn't work then I'd completely uninstall Firefox, even optimize the HDD with Windows Disk Defragmenter and Disk Cleanup, then install Firefox as a fresh install.
I don't know what the deal is with thebigdishman's system, but I can tell you from personal experience that there's nothing but problems when using Win XP Home. I absolutely HATED that O/S! I ended up wiping it from my machine and installing an old copy of Win 2K on my laptop because with XP Home, I kept getting "the blue screen of death"!! Personally, I'd put Win XP Pro on ALL machines. But that's just my personal opinion. I've got a buddy in Florida who used XP Home and hasn't had any problems - although, he doesn't do as much with his computer as I do and as much as you do from what you're describing.

Re: Mozilla Firefox downloads problem
I agree with the other suggestions to uninstall and then install a fresh copy on the laptop giving you problems. It is a pretty big red flag that since this is happening only on your laptop running XP Home, not on the other computer you have running XP Home, and not on your laptop running XP Pro, that it is likely just an issue with that one install.
With Firefox, its not a big deal to uninstall and reinstall. You don't lose your data if you do. If you are worried about that, read the release notes on uninstalling. If you are very worried about losing your data, you read the notes on backing up a copy of your profile.

What security apps are on the machine in question?
What, if any, security apps used to be on this machine?

I have reinstalled the updated Mozilla Firefox but the problem still exist. I have noticed, it usually happens when 2 or 3 windows with 5 or 6 tab is opened. My system configuration is pretty good. Cant understand whats the problem.

Addons are not creating any problem. I have even uninstall & reinstalled them to see whether they are creating any such problems. Can't figure it out.

Re: Mozilla Firefox downloads problem
Firewalls can cause this issue. For a test, try turning off any and all firewalls on the computer having the issue. Since you say these computers are networked, I assume you have used a router. Check to see, if there are any restrictions on the IP assigned to the computer having the issue.
This is far easier than going through the trouble of uninstalling and re-installing the browser. Then double check your browser settings. Don't forget to reactivate the firewall(s) after you test.
By the way, I have three computers on XP Home and two on Vista. I have not had a single issue with either OS. I keep them updated.
