Pointing Out Mistakes of Others
:)
Well, it is the basis, the very foundation of what goes on here at the WPW forums.
Where else can you point out mistakes and it be acceptable? (Hey Mom, look, I’m pointing!)
I want to start by pointing at Mike, yes our Administrator, because if you are going to point then, why not start at the top?!
Oh gosh, I should have set a poll so I would know how you guys feel about my post, because you may not have the right words at hand… oh well, hindsight and all that.
Mike,
With all sincerity, I feel it my responsibility as a member to speak up if I feel my contribution is worthwhile, even when the truth may not be what you expect.
First of all, you should have posted your announcement of the WPW Reputation System here, in the break room.
Yes, this is a GAT forum and that leads to the second suggestion. Don’t make it an Announcement of "What's Comming", no, just call it a thread with an interesting title and an interesting concept.
Now I wish I could suggest some pleasing user labels for you to use on us, however at the moment I am tapped. I’ll try to have some ideas to throw at you but you know how it is when you try too hard sometimes.
Anyway perhaps others can make a thread of it!

(AS they look over THERE>>>> I will thwow the confetti up there ^ .0)
Hello,
Looking at it objectively, there seems to be a clash between professionalism and playfulness.
The fuss is about more than just playing with words to get witty ways of expressing the status of a member’s posting history it’s upsetting that a professional image could be unjustly diminished by playing/corrupting the poster’s labeled status.
I can see fun in that, if it is about someone else, and I can see fun in joking about doing it. Even though I wouldn’t actually do it myself, there may be some who could care less about the image reflected by their own ethics.
Of course a professional environment would want a more accurate way of presenting this history. Personally that is out of my field but I’m would guess it’s possible.
Now, since I have been told/warned of what’s coming, I need to try and find some labels that I will feel comfortable with… Could you do the same, please?... I’m tapped, and this is a tough one , umm, I mean ELEVEN!!!

As I was thinking of how a post is characterized, some questions came to me.

Can we display an image in our sig of a ‘VOTE’ button? To be fair also a “Vote and I’ll spam your box!” ?

As you can see, I haven’t finished my thoughts but you can see where this is going but I have to break now so I thought maybe you could look it over and point out any mistakes or offer suggestions. You know like this is an ‘Open Project’. Input is welcome.
Thanks!

Now that I am this far into the process, it is becoming obvious to me that this isn’t going to have a detrimental effect unless the poster is a negative poster.
Quote:
The Defaults:
Negative level 3 = User is infamous around these parts
Negative level 2 = User can only hope to improve
Negative level 1 = User has a little shameless behavior in the past
Unknown/No Reuptation = User is an unknown quantity at this point
Positive level 1 = User is on a distinguished road
Positive level 2 = User will become famous soon enough
Positive level 3 = User has a spectacular aura about
Positive level 4 = User is a jewel in the rough
Positive level 5 = User is just really nice
Positive level 6 = User is a glorious beacon of light
Positive level 7 = User is a name known to all
Positive level 8 = User is a splendid one to behold
Positive level 9 = User has much to be proud of
Positive level 10 = User has a brilliant future
Positive level 11 = User has a reputation beyond repute
|
These are the default predefined labels which are swell to use in a social environment however, as Mike stated, these can be customized.
So. now I just need to covert the descriptions from my draft into quaint phrases… and remember this is an “Open Project”… It is times like these that I would consider that mind dump from CTABUK.
and,... GHG, would you drop the colored snow and give this to your group?

Some kind of help,… How long would you people let me go on before somebody pointed out my mistake?
Mike,
I apologize. It isn’t that I don’t think you have enough to do,… I just really didn’t understand fully how this worked. Last night as I was shooting pool it occurred to me that my train was going in the wrong direction… like a lot of my shots.
Anyway, here are my suggested labels but there are only 9.
Positive level 9 = admired
Positive level 8 = most honored
Positive level 7 = very distinguished
Positive level 6 = honorable
Positive level 5 = highly qualified
Positive level 4 = qualified
Positive level 3 = respected
Positive level 2 = trusted
Positive level 1 = Acknowledged

Hi Clicken :) long time no see!
I feel bad about how out of hand this reputation system has gone... At SES NY I talked to Rich and Mike about it... As it's used on most major forums.
Here's the idea - it's just small pips (little green .gif images) red if your naughty.
If Mike hadn't said anything... 70% of the board would have never known about it.
Here's some facts:
you can only vote a certain number of times per day
You can not vote for the same person twice (you have to vote for other people before you can vote for the same person again)
This is NOT a popularity contest! I can't stress that enough....
The simple fact of the matter is this - the only people this will have a negative effect on is the people that come to your home (WPW) and try to dirty it up with useless crap / spam. You can (as a regular member say I don't like that) and it gives the power to the posters!
This really is a GREAT thing... and it's a standard issue type of gizzy for ALL VBulletin systems.
for example if you were to go here and take a look... you'd see all of our productive posters :)
In essence it's a great way to run self promotional spammers away :) When it comes out you'll all wonder why there was such a big deal made about it!
BTW you can only see the rep statements if you mouse over someone's pips otherwise it's hidden and as I said earlier... most people won't even know it's there!

Thanks for the explanation ne01, this is new to me so it helps to understand. It was probably just the default settings which upset most people. It seemed so, so,... unprofesional but how could anyone object to labels like these?
Quote:
Positive level 11 = grand master
Positive level 10 = admirable
Positive level 9 = honorable
Positive level 8 = distinguished
Positive level 7 = established
Positive level 6 = highly qualified
Positive level 5 = qualified
Positive level 4 = respected
Positive level 3 = trusted
Positive level 2 = commendable
Positive level 1 = acknowledged
Unknown/No Reuptation = novice
Negative level 1 = eccentric
Negative level 2 = raw
Negative level 3 = delusional

My final submision! :o)

Re: Pointing Out Mistakes of Others
The details of the system have been posted here. I think you'll find that it is pretty fair. Many factors go into RepRank (yes, that's what it's called now) and while no system is perfect, it wouldn't be the easiest thing in the world to game.

Re: Pointing Out Mistakes of Others
It's not easy to game... that's why I suggested it
If you post something worth while... it's easy for another member to say "Thank You" for your thought out post... if someone was funny you can post up a nice Thanks! You can't however continue to rep the same people over and over and over again... it's as fair as it gets on the internets... so as I tell my secretary "There's no Crying in the internet!"

Re: Pointing Out Mistakes of Others
<sniffle>
It does a heart good.
+_-
At first it seemed silly because the nature of this forum is business and that voting would be the last thing on a posters mind. As a new member however, it would be helpful to know which members have earned credibility because business is at stake. Now it doesn’t seem so silly.
Thanks Guys!
