Default Apparently this world needs less...

Harry Potter????

I can think of tons of things more worthy of a ban than Harry Potter. Sheesh. If I was a mother and my son or daughter wanted to read an 800 page book for fun, I'd have absolutely no problem with it.

What's worse, the series made the top 10 Most Challenged Books of the Nineties. Ok, so I can understand challenging Daddy's Roommate, but even that I fundamentally disagree with.

Can any of you bookworms explain what's so offensive about Harry Potter?

Default I'd love to but...

I've managed to stay away from harry potter, never read a single book or saw the movies... I do know, from what the millions of ppl I know who read these books, that they are full of "adult" jokes and have lots of sexual innuendo...its one of those read between the lines kind of thing.

At the same time, I do not approve of banning books, ever. Children are getting more sex and violence from their tvs and their computers - visual and graphic in their face - as opposed to imagined from what they are reading, so why ban books?

Just leave the poor books alone, its a dying medium anyways, what with the creation of e-books and the convienience of the internet wireless-ness and smaller handheld devices.

Besides what Rae said (post before mine) I know that a lot of people don't like Harry Potter simply because it is all about witchcraft...so some of the more 'religious' people out there do not like it because that is seen as being evil. I am not going to get into those views because this isn't the place to do that, (and of course no one else who reads this topic should either I don't think) but that is one reason I have heard for people being against Harry Potter.

I'll admit I'm a Harry Potter geek. I own all the books and movies. I haven't heard many complaints on "adult" jokes, although the books have gotten more mature as the kids have grown. This does involve love interests and some difficult choices/sacrifices that most kids don't have to make. The few complaints I have read in this regard are quotes that are taken out of context. Like when you say something innocently and someone else pipes in "Thats what he/she said." Gives the quote a completely different meaning.

As Tiffany stated, most of the objections I've read concern witchcraft and the Bible says (basically) anyone practicing withcraft will go to Hell. Therefore witchcraft is evil. And these books promote witchcraft and so MUST be trying to convert our children to doing evil.

Obviously, as a fan of the series, I don't agree with this. I find it ironic that people never mention that they kids celebrate xmas. And the Bible doesn't just say witchcraft...It also refers to pretty much any form of magic. Most, not all, but MOST people who complain of Harry Potter also let their children dress up as fairies for Halloween, let their kids watch movies like Wizard of Oz (Glenda the Good? Witch) and Disney movies (Fairy Godmother?), and never complain about Santa, the Easter Bunny, or the Tooth Fairy.

If the Bible is against witchcraft AND magic, why can we outcast one without the other? Double standard, anyone?

...

Sorry, as the wife says, "I'll step off the soapbox now."

Ban Harry Potter? How is that possible? My son Christian, that is studying law in Bergen, simply loves the books. It is no joke, he buys and reads them in English, German and Norwegian.

That is absolutely ridiculous!! Sounds like the kind of parent that 'shields' their children from all the 'scary' things in the world and ends up creating a nieve social reject!

I'm sure that isn't true. I've read most of them and I sure didn't find anything of the sort!
