Compiling what?
For graphics any linux/windows/mac computer can handle that. Photoshop/Paint shop pro will work on a mac/windows pc or on a linux pc with vmware/wine or use the native unix Gimp (my preferred solution).
For games there is no option but windows xp, a few games get ported to linux but not enough to choose it over windows as a gaming platform. Directx is THE toolset for games programming, openGL will never compete.
If you are writing C/C++ programs (ala a need to compile) the you would be wasting time with windows/cygwin solutions and would be better in a native unix (linux or bsd) environment (yep, even for developing windows apps you would be better in linux with the likes of GTK for cross OS compatibility) If you are writing desktop software for a living then you need every possible customer you can get.
Compiling, then its a no brainer it has to be Linux
Graphics, Linux or Windows, whatever applications you are familiar with.
Gaming, Windows, another no brainer.
Notice that the mac is not mentioned at all, maybe a a graphic workstation but for everything else, nah. Nice OS but there are others that do what a mac does and do it better.
