Now that the World Cup is over...I thought you might all enjoy a brand new game to play:

Zidane's move actually reminds me of me beating my head against the wall during the France v. Switzerland tilt wishing it would just end.

WC '06 left me with a new understanding of why animals will sometimes chew their own limbs off when trapped. I had an uncanny urge to scratch my own eyes out more than once.

OK... really, I'm thru making jokes about soccer (just can't seem to help myself). I really am glad for those of you who enjoyed it. I hope your teams all did well and stuff.

Does this mean we can get on with talking about "real" football?

Real football = Soccer Q.E.D.

American football may have its roots in Italian football (I do not write soccer).

You must not mix soccer and football.

You must not mix handball and football.

I think, after this World Cup, I hope for more basket ball rules in soccer.

Well, Football (as in the NFL) has only one name. It isn't called anything else. I do not have any explaination as to why soccer is called soccer in some circles and football in others, the fact remains that it is however and that isn't the NFL's fault.

Football is just football. Call it a cultural disconnect, a semantic fluke, a geo-spatial linguistic anomoly- whatever you like. Fact of the matter is, you say "football" in the USA and 99.9% of the time we mean football as in the NFL. If we are talking about soccer... we say, 'soccer'.

I don't know why football is called football. Furthermore, I don't care why football is called football. By the same token, I have never once found myself inquisitive as to the etymology of the word 'soccer'.

Football starts soon here (not soon enough). Soccer just finished. I didn't name it. I can't explain the rationale behind the name. But at the end of the day, that completely doesn't matter because soon Sunday will mean something special (and Monday night to a lesser extent).

There will be no faking of injuries, grabbing of ankles and rolling around like a little girl with a skinned knee. With the exception of punters and kickers (who often start out as soccer players).

There will be no 0-0 scores.

There will be no penalty kicks and red cards.

When the clock runs out, the games will be over.

It will be time to order pizza, drink beer, and lay on the couch for unhealthy periods of time.

It will be time to worry about who to start in my fantasy league and spend time thinking about creative smack to talk to my opponents.

It will be time for commercials with girls in bikinis telling me what beer is better than the other -and I shall hear them out.

And it will all be good. I don't care what you call it.

It is fotball in Norway too. Neither do I know why it is called soccer.

It is beautiful summer here in Norway, and important sad things happening in the Middle East.

When will we understand that we all live in the same space ship? Is it possible to log off from this speceship to a better?

Have a nice weekend.

I think normal regular people tend to get along for the most part. Even when they don't, they can typically work things out long before anybody launches or detonates anything. It's the politicians you gotta worry about.

Soccer is an abbreviation of Association Football.

Tim, would you elaborate a bit on how this abbreviation came about? How do you get soccer out of Association Football?

In England, there were two types of football; rugby football and association football. The slang for rugby football was 'rugger' and the slang for association football was 'assoc', which gradually evolved into 'soccer'.
