Default Sirius Podcasting

Adding to the ever-expanding lexiconical (lexiconal? lexiconiferous?) universe that cyberspace has berthed, the most recent newborn phenomenon of “podcasting” has caused radio giant Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. and Viacom’s Infinity Broadcasting to develop a whole new brand of radio.

For those of you who are out of the loop, a “podcast” is an amateur Internet broadcast made from uploaded audio files. Since the release of iPod from Apple Computer Inc., users have been downloading these programs, which are typically music libraries accompanied by commentaries from their creators on various subjects.

Because of the gritty realness, the lack of commercials, and the pure form broadcasting appeal, podcasting has become an unexpected media smash. So much so that Sirius Satellite as well as Infinity Broadcasting announced that they both will have stations with podcasts.

Infinity was the first on the scene with its San Francisco pilot station KYCY-AM, adopting the format.

Sirius, with 1.4 million subscribers, said the show will be broadcast on Sirius channel 148, a talk-radio station.

One might expect XM Radio and Clear Channel to be the next to join the fray.
