Starting an Affiliate Program

Does anyone have a link to a good tutorial or some decent advice about how to start an affiliate program for selling products from an online retail store?

I would join one of the big networks, commission junction or whatever, but they all charge huge monthly fees. I want to just try this out with a few affiliates that I know am interested.
