i would like to make a small site just for me and a selected few. i would like to make the entire site password protected, as when you type in the URL, a prompt comes up for a username and a password. i would prefer that you could create multiple usernames with multiple passwords, but just having one user and one pass would be fine as well. once the information is entered, the person would have access to all parts of the site.
Not too sure about other control panel, but Cpanel allows you to create password protected directory, in other words, when a user type in the url in the address bar, he will be prompted for username and password. However, this method only allows you to create one username and one password.

If you are thinking of using multi-username & passwords, you will need a database. Write a code that needs UN and PW before accessing to the secure area and insert the code on every single page that needs login information.

anybody know what i should do about free hosting? i might resort to yahoo if worse comes to worse...
Why use free hosting when you can get a really good deal on hosting nowaday? Someone from this board might be able to offer you a small hosting account for $0.50/month.

i have 800 mb available, and i don't even think i am using 300. is there any way i can allow space on this hosting service to another domain, or am I talking crazy?
If you have a reseller account, you then can create as many account as possible for each domain. Otherwise no...
