hey deb, as a follow up to the aforementioned, the thing to realize, that Photoshop is a Photographers tool as well as a Designer and Web Layout graphics program. But onething it isn't is a html editor or layout program.
But there are some things you can do to help make that migration from Photoshop to your favorite html editor a little easier.
Primarily, Slice your layout as you would want it to appear in sections of graphical elements. The goal of slicing is to optimize your graphics for your intended web audience per browser. But within, the slicing process, there are further controls that can help make that migration a little smoother.
Here's a few pointers:
a) Besides the purpose of optimizing graphics, Slices also allow you to predetermine what areas of your layout can be discarded, and what to keep. (I generally always consider a header, menu, content and footer areas when designing) This meaning, a solid color graphic (without textures) can be totally discarded (deleted) and set that table cell to the color of the original graphic.
b) For every slice, there are further slice options to manipulate. Such as cell dimensions, url handlers and status bar messages, etc. More importantly, for an area(graphic) that will be discarded and replaced with textual content, set the slice option to 'No Image' and your ready to go.
There's plenty of more to tell and theres further details within the Help manual (F1 Key) to clarify, but I hope thats a nudge in the right direction for you.
cheers
