We have get so crazy about link building. However recently trying to optimize for some keyword for a target niche, it makes me puzzled for some time. For the first time, I am left paralzed realizing I actually know nothing about

I openly declare here that I am trying to target the keyword "personal growth development". Initially, I thought its a pretty easy competitor with only 3 inbound links. Normally, I only check the #1 rank competitor's site. But as I looked down, I'm surprise that my other competitors having more content, higher
PR, website optimized and containing thousands of inbound links! What caught me shock was these competitors are not #1!
Is the site above better optimized and google gives the thumbs up for relevancy? Links is no longer importance?
I have no answe but I'm hope someone who is
seo expert to give advice on it. What is really important in
SEO or is Google actually screwed up this time.
But I doubt so, I encountered more and more of such cases where competitors with very few links less than 10 actually rank number #1 for competitive keyword.
