Length of time has so many variables. But, I wouldn't be discouraged until you've hit the 1-year mark. There are many people who do it much faster, but it all depends on your skills, the niche, the pay-outs for that niche, etc. ,etc. etc.
The key is really how much time you have to spend each day and where you spend that time.
spyfu can give you an idea of how much a particular niche is paying as far as adsense is concerned. Adsense usually pays you 10 to 25% of what the click is worth.
