Your theory sounds correct. Google is a algorithm and the sandbox is to keep the net clean from page spammers, etc. Now if your site had tons of traffic such as you stated and you continue with what you were doing I too believe this would reverse the sandbox effect. However, may slow you down for a few months or so until the sandbox is reversed.
