Re: .net vs .org which one is better for search engines?
No body has still technically answerd this question. So i will let you know of some interesting points.
Both are, it depends on your SEM and SEO strategy, though if you are having trouble selecting a domain the below information may help you greatly.
.org
Is used by organisations, groups, events, non government, charities and services.
used primarily for free services, products, information held by the above categories
they are highly regarded by search engines more than .net because of the charity factor.
.net
Primarily used by internet companies or networks, developers, designers etc.
.gov
Primarily used by government organisations and anything related including police, and emergency services, art galleries, museums, schools or anything owned by government.
.com
Primarily used as for commercial, meaning commercial business.
.info
Primarily was used by marketing companies, and today, spammers!!!
Not surprisingly don't ever buy a .info domain thats what i believe and if you do a search about this you will notice that spammers and very bad designers use them. this is the extension that should never have been invented. but in some way its good as it categorises all the spammers into that domain.
New Domains Comming!! New Beginnings!!
Depending on what you require your domain for i would take a look at alternative domains there are alot of very new and sexy names comming out such as .shop .inc .church .game .video and many more. If you want your website for informational purposes i would look at its niche and categorise it under that domain extension and promote it from there.
The future
Within the next twenty years the .com domain will most likley decline in value as more and more domain extensions are released. The owners of .com domains will be forced to acquire all or most other extensions to retain their market presence and new emerging niche domain markets in order to keep their customers from being miss guided to a false or similar website (trademark fraud or website copycats).
It is immpeccable that you think of how long you want your site running. 5 years, 10 years, forever? you need to plan the future of your site. what do you want it for, to make money from clicks(spamformation websites)? to be infomative, to promote a product? to promote you?
Search engines will support additional domain extensions along with governments as this will give them the ability to refine their search algorythms and filter such sites as .xxx domain extensions. Government will legislate the internet as it grows and matures according to the extensions and apply law to each extension such as .finance or .bank (both not available yet) if created. for example in the banking/finance industry there are laws againsed providing information to you. Again when such domain nicheing matures approximatley twenty years away search engins will have the ability to filter out specific information creating the today's 'demanded' more 'symantec web' than the typical crawling/indexing under a keyword driven results/or traffic ranking based web. Though, these factors will be included in the existing models that google and yahoo and other search engines use today.
The Verdict
Choose a domain name extension that will appeal to your niche or audience .com may be the best today but may not or will not be the best in the future as crappy designers and domain sitters use them and search engines begin to refine their algorythms as new domains become available.
i would buy the .net and .org domains and also obtain a third when and if available for your niche, ie: if you are selling videos i would obtain the .video domain name.
Good luck!
