Default I watched the Paralympics opening ceremony

I had not intended to, but as my wife and I visited an elderly friend who was watching it, we watched it with her.

We were spellbound.

The whole thing was very well done and the disabled athletes were able to watch it all, not something they could do before.

The man who winched himself and his wheelchair up (with a few pauses on the way) to the top of the stadium to light the flag was awe-inspiring.

But the 12-year-old ballerina who lost her leg in the earthquake in May and who took part in the dance. Well, I am a cynical journalist of fairly advancing years. But I have to say there were tears in my eyes when I watched her. And the dance they choreographed around her? Out of this world.

We were lucky that the BBC broadcast the whole ceremony, live.
