I find at times there can be a "honeymoon" period with new domains on Google so providing the spiders find you from a couple of popular sites (links) you will be ranked on page one almost from day one of launch, but then if you have got it a bit wrong the slow descent into obscurity starts after a couple of weeks! Thats when SEO comes into play! Again I must point out I am in a vertical market place so my experience may not be others experiences!
