Default DIY logo feedback needed

Hi. Really great site you have here. I found you by googling "critique my logo".

I'm starting a biz and I'm trying to be stingy on expenses so I'm taking a DIY shot at a logo.

Here's the webpage blurb about why I picked this name (Union Hill Financial) for the company:
Quote:
(talking about the name of an area near me)
Union Hill was given that name after the Union Army camped there during the Civil War.

“Union” matters to me. Financial Planning is an alliance where I need to learn your goals and values. My greatest joy in this career is helping you meet those goals and keep those values.
Here's a couple of the logos I've drawn. I started off with this one. The upward slope is intentional (investors like that. )

but my son said the blue "freehand" looked like a river. Darn. I was hoping for a hill. so I made a 2nd logo with a blue sky so it would show the hill better.

What do you think? Tweak one of the above?

Start from scratch? Concepts I would like to evoke if you have other suggestions: alliance, unity, stability, growth, partnership, union, a hill, maybe even a Union soldier.

If you have any suggestions, I'm open to them. Thanks for all feedback and don't worry, you can be brutally honest, I know I'm not a pro designer.
