Re: Teaching religion
The small little town that I live in has a population of about 2500. Despite its small size, being a suburb of NYC, immigrants from around the world are here representing virtually every 'major' religion. So while it sounds all well and good, consider that teaching these things can be an inherent source of conflict. My good friend Sameer, who runs the local Blimpies, may not appreciate teachings on Islam which could be interpreted as favoring Shi'a over Sunni Islam. My best friend, who is Jewish, might get upset if the curriculum fails to mention that Martin Luther was a rabid anti-Semite. Then of course there could be adherents of 'minor' religions whose religion may not be deemed large enough to warrant inclusion into the curriculum.
Right now you can send your kid to a private school on your dime if that is what you want to do, otherwise in the current system you can send him or her for supplemental education offered by local religious institutions.
