As you were talking about. All of your checkout places should be a secure section. Via Having the HTTPS instead of just the HTTP:
Now there are other things as wel you can look for. If a site has a SSL Certificate, meaning they are secured and able to handle payment processing their self instead of going through a payment processor, they should have a SSL logo displayed on their site, and stating their encryption methods.
Also, if you ever go through a processor that is with PayPal or GoogleCehck out they are always going to be secure transactions.
