We use 7 different average priced hosting providers to host our and our customer's sites. We reached this number of different providers by testing.
No one proved to be perfect - downtimes happen from time to time for various reasons: technical configuration issues that disable critical services, malicious scripts, spammer attacks, datacenter issues, accounts beeing moved to other servers. Downtimes occur usually few hours or less and most of the times we and the customers are not aware of them.
We tried 20-50% more expensive hosts but downtimes were similar.
