My experience is different. I have a website with both Thekeyword.com and keyword.com
When I search on keyword it is the domain Thekeyword.com that ranks Nr.1
When I search on Thekeyword I also get Thekeyword.com as Nr.1
No sign of 'The' damaging the Google SERP.
