Since the site is more than 5 years old, I would never dare to change the domain. To specific, think about TrustRank.
I had two cases like that which sites went off the map at Yahoo and MSN and his rankings in Google were screwed up too.
Now they is back to the top in all 3 major SE. And for additional keywords they never have ranked for before.
We got all that fixed. So don't do fast steps and don't listen to every fairy tail.
