You're right, nobody can predict with absolute accuracy, but when I take on a site I can make a good guess ... and I usually am wrong: the site usually ranks well sooner than I told the client.

Optimization for both SEs is not the same. As you said, Yahoo focuses more on-page and we 're pretty darn sure Google is at least a little more skewed in its algorithm toward links. So a webmaster might spend a lot of time developing links and do very well in Google, but not as well in Yahoo. With a little more focus on site, Yahoo rankings could improve.
