it depends. certainly don't trade links with low quality sites because who you link/associate with affects your image and your ranking.

You have to judge the sites very critically. what you are told about link exchanges is true;they do create a benefit for the sites and the visitors, but the argument is often pushed around for any whichever reason anyways.

Think about it more in terms of content. if your site sells bras, then maybe it is in the best interest of your visitor to link to a site that sells women's underwear. because a product you recommend will be seen as trusted because they are buying a product or a service from your site since they trust your product/service.

this doesn't mean you need to go rush and create a links page right away and make as many exchanges as possible to get rankings - quite the opposite.

always think of a link in terms of a benefit for the visitor - if it isn't valuable to your visitor then don't trade links.
