Still works. Every now and then we have a client site with just too few backlinks and the result is looooong waits for Google to start indexing. We submit to about 50 directories, (free and paid) and shortly after Google starts visiting and indexes everything.
Obviously, the effects are less visible when you already have a good amount of backlinks and a reasonable
PR.
