On the contrary the bulk if not all my latest sites are 100% fluid.
The only reason I would do fixed width is if there was a specific reason for it such as the requested design simply can't scale with a fluid layout.
I agree with Dave when he says reduce the browser width, this machine is running at 1920x1200 which allows me to view 2 websites at once or reference material while posting, I can't imagine ever running a browser maximised. However max-width on supported browsers helps with the line length problem.
