it's not about Google being beaten. the point is MLS is not designed to topple Google. once again, MLS is not a search engine - they are a browser plug-in that works off of other search engine queries.
and yes, Google will probably try to buy MLS if it works like Gabriel wants it to. the question is, will he sell it them if they come calling. not sure how the above scenario can be considered scary. this type of thing happens on a daily basis in the business world.
